Restoration Games Announces New Game: Battle Monsters

Fans of the UnMatched series of one-on-one or team based tactical miniature games who want something a little bigger just got some ‘titan’ sized news from Restoration Games today. From their press release:

“Today, Restoration Games launched a Kickstarter campaign for the upcoming Battle Monsters game, set in the exciting world of the Monsterverse franchise from Legendary Entertainment. The game offers two core sets Godzilla vs. KingGhidorah and Kong vs. Mechagodzilla. Each of the Titans is supported by a unique faction: Monarch, Apex Cybernetics, a horde of superspecies, and a team of skilled mercenaries led by Col. Alan Jonah. You can mix and match the Titans and factions from both sets to face off against one another in an epic battle. The goal is simple: Defeat the opposing Titan to win the game. To do that will take clever positioning, timely card play, and some lucky dice rolls.”

“Battle Monsters is a “major” restoration of the 1992 Battle Masters according to Justin D. Jacobson, president of Restoration Games. “We wanted to keep the grandeur of the original, but we knew the system needed to get a lot meatier to support the new IP. Oh, and it had to fit on a table. Fans of the original from back in the day might not be too excited about playing on the floor these days. Not to worry, though, the scale is still there in the form of the highly detailed, 6-inch tall Titan figures.”

As of today, May 15, 2024, the project has already well exceeded its $250k goal with over 1000 backers. Note that Restoration Games also has a scoop in this project, as the Battle Monsters project is the first to utilize the new “Pledge Over Time” feature, where backers can spread their payments over three months instead of paying all at once.

I never played Battle Masters, the original game from 1982, although I remember the games. The players had giant figures and a huge foldout Twisters style playing mat. I like the fact that the new Battle Monsters version from Restoration Games appears to retain the “bigness” of the game, while scaling it down for modern tables and hobby gamers.

According to the press release, Restoration Games says that the fulfillment for the Battle Monsters project is scheduled for August of next year.
