The Scrabblers of Catan
While playing Scrabble with the family the following conversation took place:
“I have all vowels.” “I have all consonants.” “We should play this like Settlers and Trade.”
Thus was born the Scrabblers of Catan, a totally untested variant to unleash on the world.
Basic Scrabblers of Catan (for 3-4 players)
So as to keep the game moving, you may only trade when it is not your turn! Once a player finishes their turn and scores the next player may not trade. (You might want to say there is a minimum of 30 seconds of trading each turn).
Trades must always be 1:1.
Advanced Scrabblers of Catan
In this game you always draw a fixed number of tiles per turn (4?). Your rack size is unlimited. Make sure everyone gets the same number of tiles per game.
Unlike in Basic Scrabblers of Catan, you can trade uneven amounts of letters.
There is no bingo bonus, instead whenever you play a 6+ letter word you “build a road.” 6 letters is one road, 7 letters is two roads, 8 letters is four roads, 9 letters is 8 roads. The longest road VP is worth 25 points.
Similarly, whenever you play 3+ words in a turn, you get a knight. (3=1, 4=2, 5=4, etc. You may want to adjust this is you use the two letter word list, as it is too easy. I play ‘no stupid words.’) The most knights is also worth 25.
Game ends the round after the last tiles are drawn.
