Here for Everyone! Accessibility update

Our events are for everyone, we work hard to create fun, inclusive events that as many folks as possible can enjoy.

Board Gaming is a rare hobby that is multi ability, multi generation, a group of very diverse people can play together and have a great time. Board gaming is structured fun which is ideal for socially awkward people like me, you can meet people and enjoy their company without awkward small talk.

We plan carefully and consider how we run our events and we take extra care to support our more vulnerable members, adding extra support. These more vulnerable folks are often the ones which require the social support and engagement more.

Measures to support one group almost never reduce another groups fun they almost always improve it.For example Name / Pronoun tags help nervous folks and folks with bad memories.

Why am I saying this?
In world of hate, anger and othering often to drive clicks and views. I want to make sure our communities stay wonderful, welcoming and friendly.

We do not have a problem in HBG, it is a wonderful community and we’ve had to issue 1 warning in 12 years and 1000s of guests for someone being a bit too competitive.

Everyone is welcome as long as you follow our code of conduct, which is basically be kind and be supportive. Please come and play, have fun meet new people. I have met so many wonderful people with different life experiences to me I would not have met otherwise, many are now key volunteers helping shape and improve what we do.

Whilst gaming we often don’t make small talk as we get into the flow state of gaming but if topics do end up making you uncomfortable but do not feel frightened to ask for a change of topic or step away.

Thank you for letting me personally clarify. I have neurodivergent justice sensitivity so the world hurts me right now, this is also why HBG exists to create opportunities for people, the kind of opportunities and community support I wish I had.

We welcome all feedback, we try hard but we are not perfect (not even close) have to make compromises due to capacity and costs. We are all volunteers. All feedback welcome.

Want to know more we have allyship and gender inclusive language guides on our knowledge base and we are working on more training for allyship and intervention.

Thank you all for making this community as awesome it is. Be kind, be curious.
