Fruit Fight Review – Stolen Fruit Has Never Tasted So Good
Disclaimer: Fruit Fight was provided for free by CMYK Games, although the writing and opinions of this article are my own.
I’ve been sitting on this one for a while now, but as of February 25th, CMYK has released their Magenta Series of games. Lucky me, I got my hands on them early.
Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be reviewing all four Magenta games. Titles that are meant to make card games cool again. Without spoiling too much (and maybe ensuring you come back for the rest), I’d say these are cucumber fresh.
First up in this review series: Fruit Fight. A game that’s had a few past lives under the names No Mercy and HIT! Let’s see how it stacks up.

How to play
Fruit Fight is a fast-paced game of collecting and stealing fruit. Where you’ll be cheering your wins and cursing your losses.
On your turn, you’ll draw fruit cards one at a time from the deck in the centre of the table. Each fruit looks delicious (if a little blurry, like you forgot your prescription glasses) and comes with a point value.
From the humble one-point tangerine to the mighty ten-point strawberry (which, at our table, has been re-branded as dragon fruit), every card you pull potentially adds to your potential score.
But here’s the rub:
- The first three cards you draw? Always safe.
- After that, every card is a gamble. If you draw a fruit that matches one you already own, you bust and have to discard everything you picked up.
- At any time, you can choose to stop drawing and keep your fruit. Once it’s in front of you, it’s yours… for now.
Your turn may be over, but you’re never truly off the hook. If another player draws a fruit that matches one you’re holding, they can steal all of that fruit from you—no questions asked.
The only way to lock in your haul? Survive until your next turn. Once it’s back to you, any fruit you’ve held onto gets banked, making it safe from future thefts.
Play continues until the deck runs out. When the dust settles, the player with the highest-scoring fruit salad takes the win.

A game of greed, chaos, and fancy fruits
When reviewing board games, I put a premium on fun. If a game can fill the table with laughter and energy, it doesn’t matter whether it’s deeply strategic or deceptively simple—what matters is that it delivers excitement. And in that regard, Fruit Fight absolutely delivers.
The only decision you’ll make all game is whether to draw more fruit or pass, and yet, somehow, it’s always a riot to play. Because while the decision is simple, resisting temptation is not. You’ll convince yourself to draw just one more card because, really, what are the chances it’s a duplicate? Spoiler: higher than you think. Or you’ll lock eyes with an opponent sitting on a fat stack of pears, knowing full well they’re ripe for the taking.
This is why Fruit Fight is such a blast. There’s always a gamble unfolding, with either someone hitting it big and stealing hard-earned fruit or busting because they got just a little too greedy. Either way, the result is an eruption of noise with hands tossed in the air, or heads hung over the table.
So while Fruit Fight has high highs, the genius it is how frequently these moments happen. On your turn, you’re pushing your luck—either to score more points or to snatch someone else’s haul. Off your turn, you’re just as invested, because every card drawn could spell disaster for your stash. As a result, you’re never just waiting around. You’re cheering, groaning, and praying that your strawberries make it back to you in one piece.
Another big plus for Fruit Fight is that it avoids a minor flaw I’ve found in similar games like Incan Gold, where everyone makes their push-or-pass decision at the same time, leading to weird pacing issues. Fruit Fight sidesteps this by giving each player their own turn, keeping the game flowing naturally without those awkward stop-start moments.
It’s the ultimate (yet admittedly shallow) mix of push-your-luck, interaction, and quick turns that keeps Fruit Fight so addictive. We’ve played it over forty times in the last few weeks, and almost every game delivered the same level of excitement. At around 20 minutes per play, it’s fast, tense, and endlessly fun. For me, this might just be the best push-your-luck game I’ve ever played.
