Best Cooperative Board Games for Families Updated for 2025 We’re all pretty competitive in our household, but sometimes we just want to work together with a good ol’ cooperative game.  Instead of going head to head against your family, now you’re teaming up towards a common goal! These games can be great for players who feel more comfortable playing on a team where the weight of the strategy decisions are shared amongst the group. (Just make sure to let everyone have a voice and make their own choices too!) There are tons of cooperative options in nearly every category of board games available. The below games are just some of our favorites! The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring Trick Taking Game This game takes you on either a solo or cooperative journey through the Fellowship of the Ring novel. You’ll have different missions you’ll need to complete based on various moments from the book. It is a fun and challenging card playing puzzle you can play again and again! Time Trouble Navigate characters through different levels as you use transparent cards to simultaneously determine the movement of each character at the same time. It has a dash of frantic real-time challenge that keeps things interesting with an addicting “level up” style game play that makes you want to play again and again. Bomb Busters Attempt to deduce which wires to cut without setting off the bomb. There are 66 replayable missions that get progressively harder as you advance through the game. This is a unique and tricky cooperative deduction puzzle that gives everyone a big rush when you figure it out. You can play the missions again and again! Link City For a lighter cooperative option, Link City is a surprisingly fun city building game. Players will work together to place location tiles into the city based on where they think the active player would place them. It’s designed as a party game, but it’s the kind that works really well for small groups — we even love it as a date night option! Dorfromantik Based on the popular video game, Dorfromantik is a charming cooperative tile laying game where you’ll work to complete tasks in the best way using the tiles you have to score points. The game works you up to playing the full experience with a replayable campaign and 5 boxes to unlock with new game components. It’s perfects so you aren’t overwhelmed with all the scoring options at once. It’s one of my favorites for a relaxing date night and it plays excellently solo too. Beacon Patrol Work together to map the coastline as you place your tiles to connect water and land areas. There’s no way to lose this game, you’ll earn points and score yourself based on a scale. Perfect for players who love an ever evolving puzzle to solve. Daybreak Centered around a theme of climate action, Daybreak is a medium-heavy weight cooperative game. It’s perfect for players who love finding ways to eek out every last point and possible action on their turn. Designed by the creator of Pandemic (see below,) you have seemingly endless avenues to explore for strategies, playing powerful stacks of cards to create combos and cooperating with your fellow players to make sure your goals are met to decarbonize society. 5 Minute Dungeon / 5 Minute Marvel We have the Marvel version of this game and love it! Everyone frantically working together against the timer, playing cards as quick as they can from their hands — never fails to get your heart racing. With each game taking only five minutes, you’ll want to shuffle up and play again!  The Adventures of Robin Hood This family campaign game thrusts you into the story of Robin Hood. We love how the game walks you through each new element you encounter, making learning the rules a breeze and part of the game itself. 2-4 Players Burgle Bros Pull of a heist together in this clever board game. We love playing it online on Board Game Arena! 1-4 players Castle Panic Defend the castle from the horde of monsters looking to tear it down. Castle Panic is a fun tactical game where your ability to plan and cooperate together will be the key to your success. 1-6 players Chronicles of Avel We love how Chronicles of Avel immerses you into the theme! You’ll explore the land on the modular board, encounter monsters to fight, and end the game with a head to head battle against the big boss! 1-4 players.  Read our full review here Codenames Duet For a cooperative date night, we love Codenames Duet. It takes the fun of the party game and makes a fun and surprisingly difficult challenge for two! We’ve only ever won a handful of games but keep coming back for more! 2 players The Crew: Family Adventure The newest addition to The Crew series, The Crew: Family Adventure sees you working to complete 35 missions using Crazy 8s (UNO) style game play. Each of the missions is quick, even if you fail and need to try again. You can set it up, play for a short time, and then come back to it another day. No need to complete the whole game at once! The story is cute and engaging for the family with multiple characters you get to meet along the way. The Crew: Mission Deep Sea If you love trick-taking card games, then you’ll love The Crew. Work through progressively more challenging scenarios to complete missions with limited communication and careful planning. It’s also one of our favorite two player challenges as well! Mission Deep Sea is the second in The Crew series.
